Local High Schools Compete in Steak Cook-Off at Backyard BBQ Festival

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Nine Middle Tennessee high schools will be represented in the Tennessee Culinary Arts Steak Cook-Off at Murfreesboro Breakfast Rotary Club’s fifth annual Backyard BBQ Festival.

The nine high schools competing for a cash prize and bragging rights as the best culinary program in the mid-state include Blackman, McGavock, Stewart’s Creek, Glencliff, Gallatin, Smyrna, Oakland, and Siegel High. Steaks for the event are being donated by Farrar Farms’ Lynchburg Beef.

Each culinary team will receive their cut of beef in the morning, and have several hours to prepare the steak, set up plating, and rehearse their presentation before three KCBS-certified judges.

“The energy these students pour into the competition is awesome,” says Rotarian Sharon Seibert, Cook-Off coordinator. “Not only must they prepare the steak in a memorable way, they also have the opportunity to entertain the judges while presenting to the judges.”

At the 2016 Festival, one high school team memorialized the recently deceased “Prince” with a culinary rendition of the artist’s chart topping hit, Purple Rain.

This event will be held on Saturday April 29, 2017 during the Backyard BBQ Festival at Cannonsburgh Village. There is no ticket purchase required. Admission into the event is free to the public. Presentations begin on the main stage at 10:30. The public is encouraged to come out and cheer on these students.

The 5th annual Backyard BBQ Festival is a multi-faceted fundraiser for the Murfreesboro Breakfast Rotary Club. The event includes a KCBS-sanctioned Rib and Chicken BBQ Competition, the Tennessee Culinary Art Steak Cook-Off, Celebrity Rib Eating, Craft Beer Garden, Food Vendors, and inflatables play area for families.  Admission is free. Proceeds from the fundraiser go to support local non-profits.
